Canonical tag

A canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the main version of a page when several URLs show the same content. It consolidates ranking signals onto one address.

Duplicate URLs are common: tracking parameters, print versions, and http vs https all create copies. Without a canonical, engines pick one for you, and often the wrong one.

A page should usually be canonical to itself. A canonical that points at a different, wrong page is a quiet way to deindex the page you care about.
